This course is designed for people who may have heard about the work of GI Gurdjieff or JG Bennett, or read books by them, and wish to engage practically in the work they describe. It is also aimed at those who may have attended lectures, or weekly groups, but have not had a chance to work for any length of time with other people.
The course is planned as the first of a series aimed at helping people to gain practical experience of the ideas and methods of Gurdjieff, particularly as presented and developed by JG Bennett.
This first course will concentrate on the use of the body as an instrument, or tool, for spiritual transformation. The course will include work with the fundamental methods of sensation, like and dislike, and the use of the body as a source of the denying force, an essential component of spiritual work. Gurdjieff's movements will be part of the course, as will particular work on the use of attention in performing practical tasks, represented particularly in gardening and in fine woodworking, though no previous skill in any of these is required. There will be work with inner exercises, both as a preparation for each day, and as an integral part of the day's activities. The course will also include opportunities to work with meditation.
The aim of the two-week residential course is to give people sufficient concentrated experience that they will be able to continue working with the practices when they leave.
The course will be led by people of long experience in facilitating courses and seminars based on the work presented by Gurdjieff and Bennett, including George Bennett, Nanji Davison, Jan Jarvis and Stefan Maier.
